Spartans 14, Bears 2; Spartans 8, Judges 4…Now to Scoreboard Watch
Today’s first game was relatively close until the ninth, with the main difference being Chad Mullins’ fifth homer of the year, a three-run shot in the third. The Spartans scored seven runs in the ninth, with 12 batters in the inning. Every single starter had at least one hit, led by Mullins (who reached in five of six plate appearances) and Sam Alexander with three each. A.J. Boshinski had some of his control problems resurface, but was otherwise great, giving up two unearned runs in six innings, striking out five.
The second game was just a solid game all around. Brett Ossola led the offense, reaching base in all five of his plate appearances. Mullins, Matt Keen, and Steve Bills each had two hits. Noah Lieberman pitched solidly in five and a third innings, but Devin Dye pitched his second great outing of the tournament, giving up one unearned run in three and two thirds innings to get a save.
Now it’s time to scoreboard watch. Here are the current standings:
- Case – 4-2
- Emory – 3-1
- Washington – 2-2
- Brandeis – 2-3
- Rochester – 1-4
The remaining games are Rochester-Emory, Brandeis-Washington, and Emory-Washington. Emory must win both games for the Spartans to finish second, otherwise they at least share the UAA title. The only way for the Spartans to finish sole first is for Emory to lose both games and Washington to split. So the most likely result is a shared UAA title, a good sign of progress for Case.
